Strategies for dealing with gases
greenhouse gases
Importance of GHG emission reductions
We are currently facing a situation of
climate crisis
driven by an increase in the emission of Greenhouse Gases. This climate crisis involves an increase in the earth’s temperature, the consequences of which are, among others, a change in the planet’s climate, flora and fauna and a gradual rise in sea level.
This is the reason why more and more companies are committed to the environment, in order to align with several national and international proposals such as the
Agenda 2030, or the European Climate Law.
. The latter, as part of the European Green Pact, aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Integration of plans in the general business strategy
There are There are several actions that can be taken within a within a company to reduce its emissions. These may be in line with other environmental certifications
environmental certifications
or be independent. These actions are generally linked to economic savings, by obtaining more efficient means and technologies, while at the same time the company’s image is enhanced (by presenting itself as a company committed to the environment). environment) and can add value and efficiency to the processes of which it is a part.
The
first step
to start reducing GHG emissions is to count them, in order to locate our main emission sources. Once accounted for, we must pay special attention to those that represent a higher percentage of emissions for our company, without forgetting those less significant sources, but which also cause damage to the environment.
The main action is the calculation of the
Carbon Footprint
of both organization and product, in order to evaluate our main emission sources and try to minimize them. Through the
calculation of the Carbon Footprint
we will be able to count in a common unit of measurement (kg of CO2 equivalent) all the Greenhouse Gases produced during the business activity or during the production process of a specific product.
There are two accepted and recognized methodologies for calculating the Carbon Footprint: The GHG protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) methodology and the ISO 14064 methodology. Both are valid for the national registration of our carbon footprint.
Benefits of reducing emissions and other alternatives to achieve it
A reduction of Greenhouse Gases in our company is usually linked to an economic reduction in the company’s expenses. In addition, there are currently several programs in which companies committed to the environment and, in particular, to reducing their emissions, can enroll and opt for multiple benefits:

At the national level
The gradual reduction of emissions, following the registration of the Carbon Footprint, implies obtaining the «reduzco» seal granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. This can be used in the company’s communications as a way of distinguishing it from its competitors.- InternationallyFor example, the SBTi (Science Base Target) program allows companies and suppliers with science-based emission reduction measures in line with the 1.5°C global temperature reduction to join a wide network of suppliers with a highly valued international environmental label.
As an additional measure to reducing emissions, there are so-called carbon credits. The acquisition of these credits in any of their available forms (national or international) allows us to offset those residual emissions that our company is currently unable to reduce. The
offsetting of emissions
also has a place in the registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, awarding the company that offsets its emissions with national projects with a distinctive seal in addition to the «I offset» and «I reduce» seals mentioned above.
Currently
There are currently several public aid programs
programs that promote the development of reduction measures for companies, with
aid
between 30% and 50% non-refundable aid. Some examples are the Incentive Program for the implementation of thermal renewable energy installations in sectors of the economy (RD 1124/2021) or the Aid Program for energy efficiency actions in SMEs and large companies in the industrial sector (RD 263/2019).
